Picking a spot

Southern Spain sits near the northern edge of the path, so totality is short compared with North Africa. The further south you go, the longer it lasts. If you want more than 3 minutes, the quick answer is to cross to Morocco, where Tangier gets 4 min 51 s (see Morocco).

Check any town on the path map before booking. Being 20 km on the wrong side of the line turns a total eclipse into a partial one.

On the day

  • August is peak beach season on the Costa del Sol and the Cádiz coast. Expect busy roads, so arrive the day before.
  • The partial phase starts around 9:40 am. Have certified eclipse glasses ready from the start.
  • timeanddate's historical data show 2 August was cloudy 13% of the time in Cádiz and 9% in Málaga since 2000. See weather.
